United Presbyterian Church

of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

Community Description

This church was organized in 1916 and approximately five years later, it was moved into a new facility constructed in a generally undeveloped area.  During the 1920s, typical middle-class homes were constructed in the immediate area of the church building.  The building boom of the 1950s expanded to include middle-class and upper middle-class homes and the Church rapidly expanded.  Through the 1960s and 1970s, the membership was dispersed as people moved to new subdivisions in the adjoining communities.  In the 1980s and 1990s, young families began buying in the vicinity, improving home conditions and rejuvenating the energy level of the neighborhood.

Cuyahoga Falls, Stow and the surrounding communities provide a good atmosphere in which to live.  With Akron five miles away and Cleveland twenty-five miles away, many cultural, educational, social and recreational opportunities are available.  Two major Division I universities, Kent State University and the University of Akron are within 15 minutes of the church.  Other universities in Northeast Ohio include Hiram College, Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, Mount Union College, Walsh University, and several community colleges.

The Civic Theater and E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron, Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, and Playhouse Square in Cleveland are just some of the cultural centers where national touring groups perform plays, symphonies, ballets and Broadway musicals.  Called the Hall of Fame corridor, Akron is home to the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame; Canton houses the National Football Hall of Fame; and Cleveland has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  All three cities have museums including the Akron Art Museum, the Great Lakes Science Center, and Museum of Natural History in Cleveland.  Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, and Akron all have nationally recognized library systems in new facilities.

Cuyahoga Falls offers some of the best parks and recreation programs in the area.  Each neighborhood has its own park with summer pools provided for children under nine.  Water Works Park is a beautiful summer family aquatic center and the Natatorium provides a facility for year-round swimming and fitness activities.  The Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Towpath Trails, Metro Bike Trails, and the Akron Metro Park system provide a great deal of hiking, picnicking, swimming and other forms of recreation.  Skiing is also nearby.

The Cleveland/Akron/Canton corridor is the fifteenth largest metropolitan media market in the nation.  Several Cleveland stations provide extensive news coverage of the Cuyahoga Falls area, but PAX TV-23 is our Akron based station.  The Akron Beacon Journal is published daily and the Record Publishing Co. issues weekly local papers.  Several radio stations of all types are also available.

Akron supports three major shopping malls as well as many other shopping districts.  Chapel Hill Mall and Plaza are within five minutes of the Church.  The famous Strickland’s ice cream just opened a new store around the corner.   The region is noted for a plethora of fine restaurants and places of entertainment.

Many professional sports are also found in Northeast Ohio.  The Cleveland Indians baseball team, the Browns football team, the Cavaliers basketball team, the Rockers women’s’ basketball team, all play in downtown Cleveland in beautiful facilities that were all rebuilt with in the last nine years.  Professional hockey and soccer teams are also nearby.  The Cleveland Indians AA baseball team, Akron Aeros, play in downtown Akron at a newly built ballpark.  Active Little League programs and YMCA teams provide opportunities for youth.

Cuyahoga Falls has its own hospital and Akron has three major hospitals as well as its nationally recognized Children’s Hospital.  The Cleveland Clinic is recognized worldwide.  Many foreign dignitaries, celebrities, and politicians come from all over to receive medical care at that facility.  The local police and fire departments provide care and paramedic services.

Civic pride is evident in the revitalization of downtown Cuyahoga Falls and Akron.  Each city has undergone much renovation and renewal, providing all citizens with many opportunities in education, recreation, entertainment and job opportunities.
